Catophractes is a monospecific genus. That means that there is only one species within the genus. Catophractes alexandri or trumpet thorn as it is commonly known belongs to the Bignoniaceae family which is very evident from the large white tubular bignonia-like flowers that it bears from summer to winter. It makes a stunning shrub with its grey foliage and distinctive spiny seed-cases.
