Silene is a genus of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae.
Silene bellidioides, commonly known as Wild Tobacco, is a very hardy, South African indigenous evergreen perennial plant with 30cm tall, erect sticky stems and rosettes of leaves at the base. The flowering stems have a few branches with scented white or pink flowers with deeply divided petals. These open in the evening, at the tip of each branch from October to April. The flowers are said to shine like neon lights at night and attract moths to pollinate them, and the, long, tubular calyxes of the flowers are pale green striped with dark red veins. This is an excellent addition to a sunny grassland garden. Traditionally it is used as a love potion.
