Adromischus is a compact but irresistibly diverse genus of leaf-succulent “miniatures” in the stonecrop family, Crassulaceae. The name comes from Greek, with adros meaning “thick” and mischos “stem”, a nod to the chunky little stems that anchor their often bizarre leaves.

All recognised species are endemic to southern Africa, mainly South Africa with some reaching into Namibia, where they inhabit rocky slopes, cliff faces and arid shrublands in both winter- and summer-rainfall regions.

Despite their small size, Adromischus offer tremendous variety: leaves can be spotted or plain, triangular or spindle-shaped, chalky white or deep green, smooth or heavily textured. Many species are cespitose, forming tight mats or clusters of short stems that slowly spread over time.

Their flowers are usually slender, tubular spikes in shades of green, white and pink – modest compared with their leaves, but invaluable for section and species identification. For collectors and beginners alike, they are famously easy to propagate from single leaves, making them ideal subjects for experimentation and sharing.

For South African growers, Adromischus bring the magic of the Karoo and Cape mountains onto a sunny stoep or windowsill. Internationally, they are perfect for bright indoor collections and under-glass culture, thriving in small pots of very gritty mix and tolerating a wide range of climates as long as they are kept dry and well-lit. Their compact size, drought tolerance and fascinating variation also make them excellent subjects for seed-grown collections, where every seedling can show its own unique patterning or leaf shape.

Adromischus subviridis

Adromischus subviridis is a choice South African succulent for collectors who love subtle colours and compact growth. Endemic to the Succulent Karoo of the Northern Cape, it occurs from the Loeriesfontein–Nieuwoudtville area southwards to Calvinia, often wedged into rocky crevices where winter rains soak the shallow soils.

In cultivation this locality flavour translates beautifully into a tough yet elegant container plant that fits comfortably on a sunny windowsill, in a cold greenhouse or on a bright, sheltered stoep.

Plants form small, decumbent to upright subshrubs to around 15 cm tall and across, with short grey-white stems dusted in a fine bloom. The leaves are relatively large for an Adromischus: thick, wedge- to club-shaped and cloaked in a powdery, whitish to blue-green farinose coating that glows softly in good light. Over this pale ground the plant is liberally spattered with brick-red spots, especially on the upper surface and exposed leaf tips, giving each clump a unique, hand-painted look.

In the growing season, slender, up to 25 cm tall inflorescences rise above the leaves, carrying widely spaced tubular flowers typical of section Adromischus. The corolla tube is green and slightly powdery, while the lanceolate petals are pale yellow flushed with pink; the throat is hairy and the tiny anthers remain tucked inside the tube.

Flowering is mainly from mid-summer, and a well-grown clump in bloom makes a delicate contrast to the solid, rounded leaves. Our seed is produced on carefully maintained, locality-recorded parent stock, offering you the opportunity to grow plants that remain very close to wild material.

In cultivation, A. subviridis enjoys a sharply drained, gritty mix and as much bright light as you can provide without burning the leaves. Unlike some more drought-tolerant relatives, this is a comparatively “hungry” species: if kept too dry the leaves shrivel quickly, while regular but modest watering and light feeding during its active period result in tight, glossy heads of leaves.

In South African winter-rainfall regions it thrives in a rain-sheltered cold frame or greenhouse; elsewhere in the world it is best treated as a cool-house or indoor succulent, protected from heavy frost and prolonged summer humidity. For both South African and international growers, Adromischus subviridis offers an authentic slice of the Succulent Karoo in miniature – a distinctive, finely marked species that rewards attentive care with characterful clumps and elegant summer blooms.
