Buddleja is a wonderfully charismatic genus of flowering shrubs and small trees in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, celebrated for its long, nectar-rich flower clusters and its easy, airy garden presence. The genus contains more than 100 species and has a broad native range stretching across tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas, Africa, Madagascar and Asia. The name honours the English botanist and clergyman Rev. Adam Buddle, and the plants are especially admired for their fragrant blooms and their ability to draw in butterflies and other visiting insects.
Buddleja auriculata (Buddleja auriculata euryifolia) – Eared Buddleja, Eared Sagewood, Weeping Sage, Weeping Sagewood; Treursalie, Treursaliehout
Buddleja auriculata, often admired as one of the most graceful winter-flowering shrubs of southern Africa, is a superb choice for growers who appreciate beauty, fragrance, and garden value in one plant. Native to eastern South Africa and extending north into Mozambique and Zimbabwe, it occurs naturally on mountain slopes, in rocky ravines, and along forest margins, where it brings light and scent to the landscape in the cooler months.
This is a striking shrub or small tree with a naturally elegant, slightly weeping habit and handsome evergreen foliage. True to the look of the plant shown above, Buddleja auriculata carries glossy deep green leaves with paler to silvery undersides, setting off its beautiful clusters of tiny tubular flowers to perfection. The blooms are borne in profuse rounded sprays at the ends of the branches, creating a soft, cloud-like effect of creamy white to cream flowers, often with warm orange or yellowish tones in the throat, and they are sweetly scented too.
In habitat, Buddleja auriculata flowers mainly from July to September, spanning mid-winter into spring in South Africa, making it especially valuable when many other plants are still quiet. That season of bloom, together with its fragrance and nectar-rich flowers, makes it attractive not only to collectors and indigenous plant enthusiasts, but also to gardeners looking to add winter interest and wildlife appeal to their spaces. Its broad natural range and adaptable, hardy character also make it appealing to international growers seeking a distinctive South African shrub with authentic botanical charm.
For seed collectors, indigenous gardeners, and rare plant enthusiasts alike, Buddleja auriculata offers the appeal of a refined ornamental with a genuinely wild African character.
