Bulbine is one of those wonderfully characterful plant genera that rewards both the casual gardener and the serious collector. Belonging to the family Asphodelaceae, the same broad family alliance that includes many familiar succulent and aloe-like plants, Bulbine combines resilience, delicacy and surprising diversity in a way that makes it especially appealing to growers of indigenous, drought-tolerant and unusual plants.

Although many people first meet Bulbine through the popular garden species with bright yellow or orange flowers, the genus is far richer than a single water-wise groundcover. Across southern Africa, and in parts of tropical Africa and Australia, Bulbine species appear as tufted perennials, rhizomatous plants, soft succulents and fascinating geophytes with underground storage organs. Some are bold and grassy, some are compact and rock-hugging, and others develop highly succulent leaves that allow them to survive long dry periods in exposed, stony habitats.

The flowers are a major part of their charm. Most Bulbine species produce slender racemes of starry yellow flowers, sometimes orange, white or pink, often with beautifully fluffy, bearded stamens that give the blooms a lively, glowing centre. These flowers are usually attractive to bees and other small pollinating insects, adding ecological value as well as ornamental appeal.

For South African growers, Bulbine offers a direct link to some of the country’s most distinctive landscapes, from grassy slopes and rocky outcrops to dry winter-rainfall regions and succulent-rich karoo habitats. For international collectors, the genus provides a captivating window into southern African plant diversity: tough, elegant, often compact, and perfectly suited to pots, rock gardens, xeriscapes and specialist succulent collections when given sharp drainage and the correct seasonal rhythm.

Whether grown for its bright flowers, unusual succulent foliage, water-wise nature or collector value, Bulbine is a genus with real personality. It is approachable enough for beginners in its easier species, yet varied and intriguing enough to keep experienced growers fascinated for years.

Bulbine striata – Pella Kopieva

Bulbine striata is a spectacular and highly collectable South African endemic from the Asphodelaceae family, known only from the Pellaberg region of the Northern Cape. This is a true specialist of rugged arid landscapes, where it grows among quartz pebbles, pale rocks and sharply drained mineral soils on upper and middle slopes below imposing rock faces. For collectors of rare South African succulents, bulbs and geophytes, this species offers a wonderful combination of rarity, striking foliage and brilliant seasonal flowers.

The plant forms attractive basal rosettes of broad, strap-shaped green leaves that sit close to the rocky ground before sending up tall, slender flower stems. The leaves are especially distinctive, with clear darker longitudinal striping running through the blade, giving the species its memorable striped appearance. In a naturalistic setting, the fresh green rosettes contrast beautifully with reddish gravel, white quartz stones and dryland shrubs, creating the unmistakable look of a plant perfectly adapted to its rocky Northern Cape home.

When mature, Bulbine striata produces upright racemes carrying a bright display of golden-yellow, star-shaped flowers, with rounded buds opening progressively along the stems. The flowers are eye-catching and elegant, rising above the striped foliage and glowing against the pale stones and sunlit rock faces of its habitat. In the wild, flowering is associated with the active growth season after suitable rainfall, typically from late winter into spring, when the plants briefly transform the dry, rocky slopes with their vivid yellow blooms.

This species is particularly appealing to growers who enjoy unusual, location-specific plants with strong botanical character. South African growers will value it as a rare indigenous Northern Cape species, while international collectors will appreciate its compact rosettes, beautifully marked leaves and dramatic flowering stems. It is best suited to pots, troughs, alpine-house collections and specialist succulent displays where drainage is excellent and the plant can be grown lean, bright and dry between careful waterings.

Sow Bulbine striata in a gritty, sandy, mineral-rich medium and keep the seedlings in bright light with good airflow. It should never be kept in heavy, wet soil, as its natural habitat is sharply drained and stony. With patience, this species rewards the grower with bold striped foliage, elegant yellow flowers and the satisfaction of raising a genuinely distinctive South African rarity from seed.
