Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.
Disa lugens var. lugens (Herschelia lugens, Herschelianthe lugens) – Blue Bonnet Disa
Disa lugens var. lugens is a striking South African terrestrial orchid with a dramatic, unmistakable presence, prized by collectors for its hooded flowers, rich colour and intricate floral texture. Native to the Cape Provinces, this variety belongs to the remarkable Cape orchid flora and is associated with fynbos, grassland, sandy coastal flats and sandstone-influenced habitats where seasonal moisture and open vegetation allow its slender flowering stems to rise above the surrounding growth.
This beautiful variety produces upright, reddish to brownish stems carrying clusters of unusual, bonnet-shaped flowers. The blooms are richly coloured in magenta, violet-purple and deep wine-purple tones, often with darker veining, shadowed inner markings and pale greenish tubular bases. The most distinctive feature is the ornate, beard-like lip, which can appear as a tangled fringe of greenish, olive, purple-black or dark violet filaments, giving the flowers a wonderfully textured and exotic character.
In a good group planting, Disa lugens var. lugens creates an impressive close-up display, with many open flowers held at different angles along the stems. Some flowers face forward to reveal their pale central structures and dark inner markings, while others show their curved hoods and elongated bases from the side. The result is a highly collectible orchid with both elegance and wild botanical drama, ideal for growers who appreciate rare South African species with unusual flower form rather than ordinary bedding-plant appeal.
Flowering in habitat is generally from spring into early summer, varying with locality, seasonal rainfall and site conditions. The flowers are most often described in purple, mauve, magenta and violet shades, sometimes contrasted by greenish-yellow or olive tones and dark fringed floral parts. For South African enthusiasts, this is a rewarding indigenous orchid of exceptional character; for international collectors, it offers a rare opportunity to grow a distinctive Cape terrestrial orchid with outstanding specialist appeal.
