Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.
Disa sanguinea (Disa huttonii) – Blood Disa
Disa sanguinea, often admired as the blood disa, is a rare and captivating South African terrestrial orchid with a bold, jewel-like presence that immediately appeals to serious orchid collectors, specialist growers and lovers of unusual indigenous flora. This striking species is endemic to South Africa, with a naturally restricted distribution in the Amatola and Winterberg Mountains of the Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal, where it is associated with cool, damp mountain grassland and rocky slopes.
Plants form slender upright growths from underground tubers, reaching roughly 20–80 cm in height, with erect, lance-shaped green leaves that clasp the stem and grade neatly into the floral bracts. The inflorescence is dense, upright and many-flowered, creating a compact flowering spike with a powerful architectural quality. In a cultivated collection, its clean vertical form and strong colour make it especially desirable for growers who appreciate compact but dramatic South African orchids.
The flowers are small but richly coloured and produced in abundance, with deep crimson to blood-red sepals, pale green petals and a red lip, giving the spike a glowing red-and-green contrast. In habitat, Disa sanguinea flowers mainly in January and February, bringing intense summer colour to damp mountain grassland conditions.
For South African growers, this is a rewarding species for those who enjoy indigenous orchids and can provide cool, moist, well-drained conditions with excellent air movement. For international collectors, Disa sanguinea offers a rare opportunity to grow a distinctive South African geophyte with genuine collector appeal, especially for those interested in high-altitude orchids, summer-rainfall species and unusual red-flowered Disas.
