Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.

Disa schlechteriana (Herschelia schlechteriana, Herschelianthe schlechteriana) – Spur Bonnet, Spur Disa

Disa schlechteriana is a refined and highly desirable South African terrestrial orchid, prized by serious collectors and adventurous growers for its graceful white blooms and beautifully detailed floral markings. Endemic to the Western Cape, it is naturally associated with the Langeberg and nearby southern Cape mountain country between Riversdale and George, where it occurs in fynbos habitats on dry, north-facing sandstone slopes. Its restricted natural range gives this species a special appeal for collectors interested in the remarkable diversity of South Africa’s indigenous orchid flora.

This striking species produces slender green stems rising from narrow, grass-like foliage, carrying elegant star-shaped flowers with a crisp, sculptural presence. The blooms are creamy white to ivory, with a prominent upright hood and fine violet to blue-purple guide lines radiating inside the flower. A deep maroon to wine-red central throat adds dramatic contrast, while the long, delicate spurs and cleanly spread floral segments give the plant a poised, almost porcelain-like beauty.

In habitat, Disa schlechteriana flowers in summer, bringing a cool, luminous display to the warm-season fynbos landscape. The combination of pale flowers, dark inner markings and slender green stems makes it a standout species for specialist orchid growers, botanical collectors and anyone fascinated by rare South African geophytes. It is best suited to growers who enjoy working with seasonal terrestrial orchids and who can provide excellent drainage, bright light and careful attention to moisture cycles.

For South African growers, this is an exceptional indigenous orchid to add to a specialist seed collection, while international buyers will appreciate its rarity, distinctive floral architecture and strong connection to the Cape Floristic Region. Disa schlechteriana is not a common garden subject, but for patient hobbyists and collectors, raising it from seed offers the reward of growing something genuinely unusual, elegant and botanically significant.
