Maytenus is a genus of flowering plants in the staff vine family, Celastraceae. Members of the genus are distributed throughout Central and South America, Southeast Asia, Micronesia and Australasia, the Indian Ocean and Africa. They grow in a very wide variety of climates, from tropical to subpolar.

Maytenus procumbens commonly known as Duinekokoboom in Afrikaans and Dune Koko Tree in English is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape Provinces. It is synonymously known as Celastrus procumbens and Gymnosporia procumbens. Maytenus procumbens grows into a small, unarmed tree or scrambling shrub. The inconspicuous flowers are followed by spherical fruits that burst open to reveal the bright orange seeds that are loved by birds. Its preferred habitat is dune scrub or at forest margins. It can be trimmed easily into any shape from a low wide spreading groundcover to a small tree. Feed and water for increased vigour and growth.
