The large flowering plant genus Grewia is today placed by most authors in the mallow family Malvaceae. Formerly, Grewia was placed in either the family Tiliaceae or the Sparrmanniaceae. The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus, in honour of the botanist Nehemiah Grew (1641-1712) from England. Grew was one of the leading plant anatomists and microscope researchers of his time, and his study of pollen laid the groundwork for modern-day palynology.
Grewia olukondae, synonymously known as Grewia flavescens var. olukondae and commonly known as Soft-leaved Raisin or Soft-leaved Donkey-berry, is a South African indigenous dense shrub found in the Limpopo province as well as Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The species name is derived from Olukonda in Namibia, where it was first collected. It is usually a dense scrambling shrub with dark grey-brown bark. From spring to autumn, it produces bright yellow flowers which are followed by large decorative orange fruits.
