The genus Sansevieria consists of sixty species native to rocky arid lands of Africa and southern Asia. From summer to autumn, it has white flowers. This plant is well suited to pot culture as well as sunny or shady areas of the garden. The leaves are marked with pale irregular-streaked spots and arise from a rhizome in loose rosettes. The plant blooms in winter. Although seldom mentioned, the translucent white flowers are fragrant, especially during the evening. In Africa, the plant was and still is traded for its medicinal value. The rhizomes, chewed or steeped as a decoction, are thought effective against intestinal parasites, stomach ulcers, and haemorrhoids. The leaves, heated to extract the juices, are said to be good for earaches, ear infections, and toothaches.

Sansevieria aethiopica, an elegantly architectural succulent native to southern and eastern Africa, is a tough and sculptural gem perfectly suited to modern xeriscaping and low-maintenance indoor design. With its upright, sword-like leaves in subtle shades of green, edged or mottled with silver and grey, this drought-tolerant species brings both structure and beauty to containers, rockeries, and minimalist landscapes.

It thrives in full sun to semi-shade and is remarkably adaptable, tolerating dry conditions, poor soils, and irregular watering—making it ideal for water-wise gardening in arid regions or for busy growers seeking resilient houseplants. In its native range, particularly in South Africa, Eswatini, and Ethiopia, it is also valued for its traditional uses: the fibrous leaves were historically harvested for cordage, while roots have found occasional medicinal application.

Sansevieria aethiopica, synonymously known as Sansevieria scabrifolia and commonly known as Bowstring Hemp, is slow growing but long-lived, with a striking silhouette that makes it as much a sculptural element as a plant. With minimal care, it rewards gardeners with white, tubular flowers borne on upright inflorescences, often releasing a delicate evening fragrance. Whether you’re restoring a dryland habitat, building a water-wise urban garden, or simply enhancing an indoor collection with an African original, these seeds offer you the chance to grow a plant that embodies both resilience and elegance.
